Hibs 0 - 0 Falkirk: Aimless Hibs earn thumbs down from angry support

JUST as crowds in ancient Rome gave faltering gladiators the thumbs down, so the home support in Leith voiced their concerns about another drab display from Hibernian by greeting the final whistle with angry howls of dismay. The unmistakable verdict from the 10,000 or so who filled the stands at Easter Road was that this performance fell a long way short of the standard expected from Hibs.
Although they worked hard enough and were clearly willing to roll up their sleeves, too many of the Hibs players looked unsure about what they were trying to achieve. Some resembled square pegs in round holes.

It was almost impossible to identify
a meaningful pattern of play, particularly in midfield where a hodge-podge of converted forwards and defenders struggled to match a more coherent effort from Falkirk, which could easily have won the game for the visitors.

On paper, Hibs fielded enough forwards who carry a goal threat to win a hatful of matches. But with their most prized striker, Steven Fletcher, deployed in central midfield, Jonatan Johansson and Derek Riordan operating on the flanks and only Colin Nish spearheading the attack, there was a lack of focus about Hibs' work going forward which meant they rarely looked like scoring.

It wasn't so much a case of too many cooks spoiling the broth, more that not enough of Hibs' master chefs cooked their best recipes. While Mixu Paatelainen, the Hibs manager, defended the use of Fletcher in midfield on the grounds the young Scot is a gifted footballer with excellent passing skills, the truth was the international made little impact on the game. A £4 million rated striker made the contribution of a £50,000 midfielder.

Johansson has yet to produce his best since joining Hibs last month and again was out of sorts on the right flank. Riordan, who made an eager early break down the left and delivered a cross for Nish which the big forward headed wide, might have influenced the outcome more if he hadn't become so isolated.

Hibs were so disjointed that Dani Mallo could almost have taken the afternoon off. The Falkirk goalkeeper didn't have a save to make of any note until he tipped over an effort from substitute Denes Rosa in the 80th minute. Without a win in their past ten games, perhaps it shouldn't have been surprising Hibs created so few scoring opportunities. The root of the problem lies in midfield where Paatelainen lacks a playmaker. For all the signings made by the manager, the engine room of the side remains a work in progress. Players in that area are tentative and don't pass the ball with any conviction.

"As I have been all season," noted Paatelainen, "I was disappointed with the quality of our passing. We huffed and puffed in the second half."

While it's true standards have slipped across the board in the SPL this season, the reason many of the Hibs supporters expressed concerns about this latest performance was because of a lack of evidence their team are moving in the right direction.

"It wasn't the best of games to watch," acknowledged Nish. "But at the moment we're not that bothered how it looks, we're just trying to collect three points. We need a wee break and that will change things. The supporters are entitled to their opinion and we've got to be strong enough to take it. This is when you earn your wages, the time when things are not going so well."

But for the woodwork, which denied Michael Higdon, and a miscue from Lee Bullen at the back post, who scorned the best chance of the game, Falkirk would surely have collected all three points and added to the pressure being heaped on Paatelainen.

"I'm just so disappointed for the boys, the amount of effort they put into the game," admitted Bullen. "We played football at the right times and showed the way we can play. The only thing which was missing was the finish – and what a gilt-edged chance I had. When the ball fell to me I was already reading the headlines and seeing the pictures in the papers…

"It was so frustrating for us because of all the work we'd put in. We knew how Hibs would be feeling because we're in a similar predicament at home. You do start to hear the crowd. I don't think you'd feel I was lying if I told you we came to frustrate Hibs and turn the crowd against them. The longer the game went on, the more you could hear them. So we tried to use that."

What football that was played in the game came from Falkirk who had the more influential midfield players in Burton O'Brien and Scott Arfield. Both men were comfortable on the ball and looked positive going forward, a combination Hibs sorely lacked until the introduction of Rosa.

"We passed it well and produced a spirited performance," observed John Hughes, the Falkirk manager. "The man of the match was O'Brien, who has been really good for us over the last month. We merited a win, but that point might be the one which keeps us in the SPL."

"As I have been all season," noted Paatelainen, "I was disappointed with the quality of our passing. We huffed and puffed in the second half."

"Strangely Mixu, we could pass the ball fine before you arrived, and since, we've been complete rubbish. What does that tell you?."

Mixu's tactics get more and more bizarre with each passing week. He's either a complete fool, or has gone mad. I wouldn't be surprised to see wee Stevenson in goals on Wednesday.

Mixu just doesn't have it, and I think even he must know that now.

From down here it looks pretty grim. 1/6 points from the bottom 2 teams isn't good. Mixu obviously is in charge and needs to be held accountable but its the well paid players on the pitch who should be performing. I just don't get it. Do they not train together? Is Mixu changing things too often? Whats goin on??

Im almost speechless with anger about this morons tactics. He persists with 4-3-3, despite it failing time and time again until he eventually seemed to get the hint and changed back to 4-4-2. Ok things didnt go great but we looked a little better.

But now, for a crucial fixture, with him proclaiming we can still make Europe, he decides to play 4-2-4 with only ONE midfielder in the whole starting XI (and Keenan at that who was dropped earlier in the season after some medicore performances). Utter madness, no wonder the team cant pass the ball, there's no one in midfield to either Pass to, or to receieve passes so ultimately the ball will go long, how can he not see this?

I pray that I wake tomorrow to read about this clowns resignation.

There is only one answer, get a manager int here who has an idea of what he is doing!!!

I can't help feeling if Collins were still there we'd be sitting third in the league right now!

Players must be held accountable for Collins leaving, and the players are professionals surely to god, they know what they are supposed to be doing, no matter what position they are playing....

Here's a pointer to help you all out, win the ball, keep possesion, pass to another Hibs player, kick a goal..... Is that hard????

Aye right, like the rest of the team JJ is utter gash - you could wait ten years and he still would be worthless.

Glory Glory to the Hi bees!!!!!!!!!!! HA HA HA What a bunch of muppets.

At least you are all now getting your come uppance after all the drivel posted on Hearts threads these past two years.

TICK TOCK TICK TOCK...............Don't trip on the way down to the First Division.

The body language of Paatelainen said it all on Saturday. I sat behind him and he leant on the dugout for the 90 minutes with no attempt to give the players advice, nor speak to colleagues. He gave the impression of having absolutely no ideas at all to change things.Surely he will give his notice this week.

Watched a bit of the game on BBC Alba - the most telling thing for me was the picture about 2 mins to go with Mixu slumped staring into empty space with Gareth Evans head slumped into his hands.

Ohh dear.

As a Hearts fan you can obviously enjoy these moments but even I am fed up with Mixu's post match comments i.e I thought the players were magnificant today etc....

How long can this rudderless ship stay afloat.
A complete failure from top to bottom by those employed by the club to perform their duties. From board room to kit man they need to be removed.
I for one will not set foot there again until some ambition and a programme of improvement can be seen to be in effect. Out with it Rod Petrie, where do we go from here? Do you honestly know or does your arrogant smirk say it all?

Still, with all your best players sold, your last piece of real estate sold, and a healthy bank balance, what difference does it make who is in charge?

Petrie is too tight to sack the Fat Finn because he would need to pay off his contract.

Right now no manager worth his salt would touch Hibernian with a barge pole as it would only damage his managerial reputation.

Listened to Radio Scotland on Saturday (open all mikes) and all you heard from Easter Rd were Falkirk chances and booing.

Find it amazing that 4 strikers were playing yet in reality there was only 1 up front at home against Falkirk.

Is there a coincidence that since the prodigal son returned there has been a noticeable lack of team spirit at Hibs?

PS - I'm sure there were a few Hibs fans laughing at Jim Duffy on Setanta talking about Hibs being a flair team. Under Tony Mowbray yes Jim, but not when you were the manager pal.

Another week, another let down...

Mixu just doesnt get it does he?

He just cant cope with it & for all those who try and say blame the players for their lack of motivation, I say this... Who is it that is supposed to motivate them in the first place? The manager perhaps?

Mixu has lost the dressing room in my opinion and that is the end, he & the tache have lost the fans and that is even more evidence that change is needed, perhaps RP will only get the hint when he tries to flog us all season tickets for next year and is left "baffled" by the "slump" in sales.... Then again he may try & spin his way out of that by blaming the recession...

The bottom line is....

MIXU MUST GO....

Swiftly followed by an orderly transition by STF & RP to a new ownership, one which has ambition for the playing team rather than the clubs infrastructure at the head of it's list....

MIXU MUST GO....

#15 ?? memories ??
It's all hibbies have, ALL you remember is a 7-0 victory against a drunk Hearts team 36 years ago!

Instead of dreaming about the demise of your BIGGER and better local rivals, why not just concentrate on the real threat of your wee team being relegated AGAIN. See you on the 14th Flump!

Oh, and while I am on a roll.......

....'You have nothing, he has it all and as is likely Ukio folds you lot will be left with nothing bar some memories'......

What does UKIO Bankas have to do with HMFC? The bank is only a component part of the parent group UBIG.

UBIG would need to fold not the bank, you muppet.

Mixu is following a long line of ex managers anywhere. I won't resgn , I have what it takes. Unfortunately what he is taking is money under false pretence. Rod please consider how much compensation money you to spend in comparison to lost season ticket sales or God forbid revenue from playing in the Fist Division. I can only think / hope that the reason for not axing Mixu is that the board have not got a replacement manger in line. Even that sounds a bit thin. Get rid of Mixu now !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am almost worried what Mixu will come out with today in the papers. He talks about making the players going back to basics and doing the simple stuff and yet he keeps picking the players that seem incapable of doing even that. JJ is just a waste of a jersey, Nish flatters to decieve and if he makes a mistake starts holding his ankle as if he is injured.

Its blatantly obvious the problem lies in the midfield area. Get Hanlon in at left back and get Stevenson into the midfield alongside Bamba, as Thicot and Keenan are just not up to it, get Rosa wide right and let Riordan play out the left, Fletcher up front with someone say like Damon Gray.

Question for the real Hibs fans on here - Mixu will go eventually so who do you get in? I think it's time to stop the ex-player route and try someone totally unconnected with Hibs. Mowbray was a classic example of this.

#25 that is a good question and to be honest there is not really anyone that comes to mind that is readily available or sticks out as being someone I would want to manage Hibs. My ideal scenario would be however Mark Venus to come as manager and Mark Proctor as assistant and keep Gareth Evans and Donald Park as coaches.

I am surprised that the reporter missed our tactics and gameplan. Roll the ball to wee Lewis who will then boot it is far up the pitch as he can, then run around like headless chickens in our two man midfield as it comes straight back. The next game against Hamilton is almost meaningless as we know already that it will either be our passing or not defending set pieces that will let us down. The crucial game is against the Jambos. A win sees him flavour of the month and perhaps some overdue luck, a defeat sees him on his way with no arguements. We are by far and away, the worst footballing team in the SPL. I would guess that Scotland and Italy kept it on the deck more than we did on Saturday.
