BRITAIN is becoming an increasingly car-owning country, with a quarter of the population hardly ever taking long walks, government figures show.
Between 1995-97 and 2007 the proportion of British households without access to a car fell from 30 per cent to 25 per cent.

Car ownership is one thing. Vehicle miles is quite another.

I know blokes who own several large engined cars. While they are sitting in their driveway or garage, they are causing no pollution or congestion.

Having access to a car does not automatically mean you use it all the time. I have a car and a motorbike. Sometimes I take the bus, sometimes I walk. I don't use motorised transport for every journey---only when it suits me to do so.
