ALCOHOL should not be advertised on television before the 9pm watershed, a leading charity said today.
A large number of adverts for alcoholic drinks are shown before this time, when children are likely to be watching television, Alcohol Concern said.

A spokesman said: "Our research has shown a peak in alcohol advertising during the hours of 3pm and 5pm when there are obviously going to be lots of kids watching.

"Given the evidence with regard to the high level of drinking among minors in the UK, and the influence of alcohol advertising on young people, it is appropriate that the current rules should be tightened in order to protect children."

Under the current rules, alcohol adverts must not be aired if there are 20 per cent more children than the average proportion of children watching at one time.

A Committee of Advertising Practice (Cap) spokesman said: "If you're watching the seven o'clock news there can be alcohol advertising, but if you're watching The Simpsons or Ugly Betty, there can't, because lots of children tend to watch these shows."

Didn't the smoking ban start with restrictions on advertising?
I don't believe that a child seeing an advert for alcohol will rush out buy any. Children start drinking, like smoking by copying their peers.

Alcohol is a highly addictive drug which causes serious physical and social damage when consumed in excess. I would advocate going back to the point where we were a few years back and stop all alcohol advertising. This approach has had a huge positive effect on smoking related illnesses without effecting peoples liberties. The Tobacco Industry seems to have managed this and still turns a tidy profit

#1 - I agree with you about children copying peers. Alcohol exposure is pervasive in our culture but I dare you to try suggesting the "The Queen Vic" or "The Rovers Return" be written out of the nations beloved soaps!!

#2. Will those soaps be made to show the terrible deaths cause by drinking, like they have to with smoking?

Open wide drinkers take your medicine like the smokers those of you who obese, you are next!

You should have listened to the smokers, we said this would happen and here it is the beginning of the end of your freedom to drink alcohol in public, if smokers are forced to stop smoking at home as the EU and ASH demand how long will it be before you drinkers get the same medicine? they want to ban smoking in beer gardens, how long before they ban beer gardens?

It's your freedom fight for it or lose it.

#2 Are you suggesting that forcing smoking customers outside and then proposing to ban the same customers from indulging in a legal pastime of smoking where they are legally allowed to specifically under law does not affect their liberty?

How does it not affect their liberty?

You are at liberty to pay the difference in taxation as more pubs and clubs fold, it is after all a service you appear to want how is that for liberty?
