GORDON Brown led the tributes to Barack Obama yesterday, hailing the president-elect's "inspirational" ascent to the White House.
Speaking from No 10, he said: "This is a moment that will live in history as long as history books are written."

The Prime Minister described Mr Obama as "a true friend of Britain", while emphasising their shared commitment to "progressive" politics.

"I know that the values we share in common and the policies we work on together will enable us, these two countries, to come through these difficult economic times and build a safer and more secure society for the future," he said.

Across the Channel, Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, who holds the rotating EU presidency, said Mr Obama's "exceptional" campaign had underlined the vitality of democracy in the United States. "By choosing you, the American people have chosen change, openness and optimism," he said.

José Manuel Barroso, the president of the European Commission, said the election of Mr Obama opened up the prospect for a "renewed politics of global engagement".

But while the US's allies warmly welcomed his victory, the reception was cooler in the Middle East and Russia.

In fact, the Kremlin gave Mr Obama a glacial welcome to the world stage when Dmitry Medvedev, the Russian president, ordered the deployment of nuclear-capable missiles on Nato's borders for the first time since the Cold War.

He accused Washington of triggering the world financial crisis through its blunders and said selfish US foreign policy had sparked August's war between Russia and Georgia.

"I would like to stress: we have no problems with the American people. We have no innate anti-Americanism," he said in his annual address to parliament.

"We hope that our partners – the new US administration – will make a choice in favour of fully-fledged relations with Russia."

Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, had predicted the US would never allow a black candidate to become president. Most Iranians are delighted he was wrong.

They hailed Obama's election as a triumph over George Bush's "war-mongering" policies and hoped for better relations between Tehran and Washington.

An aide to Ayatollah Khamenei, Iran's Supreme Leader, said: "We are not fully optimistic, but with a real change in American policy there will be a capacity to improve ties."

Manouchehr Mottaki, Iran's foreign minister, said it was clear American people wanted "basic changes in US foreign and domestic policy".

Syria, which, like Iran, has long had a troubled relationship with the US, also welcomed Mr Obama's election.

Mohsen Bilal, the information minister, said he hoped the new president "will help change US policy from one of wars and embargoes to on of diplomacy and dialogue" and work even-handedly for peace in the Middle East.

Thabet Salem, a leading Syrian journalist, said the Arab world was rejoiced at Mr Obama's victory. "Not because he won, but because it meant that President George W Bush, who is regarded as a bloodsucker, and his clique, were gone," he said.

Iraqis said they wanted US policy to change but differed over whether US troops should stay or go – Mr Obama has vowed to withdraw the US's 145,000 forces over 16 months from his inauguration in January.

Many Iraqis yesterday urged him to keep that pledge. "We don't need an occupation here," Baqi Naqid, a journalist, said.

A spokesman for Muqtada al-Sadr said Mr Obama's victory reflected the "wish of the American public to withdraw forces from Iraq".

African family's joy at their 'son of the soil'

BARACK Obama's Kenyan family erupted in cheers yesterday, singing "We are going to the White House!" as their relative became the first African-American to be elected US president.

In the western village of Kogelo, where the president-elect's late father was born, police had to tighten security to prevent hordes of media and others from entering the rural homestead of Mr Obama's step-grandmother, Sarah.

But the elderly woman and several other relatives came outside to cheer for Mr Obama in a country where the Democrat is seen as a "son of the soil".

They cheered, danced and sang in the Luo language before heading back inside the compound.

Kenya's president, Mwai Kibaki, declared a public holiday today in honour of Mr Obama's election victory.

How the world reacted

"(The Pope's message to Obama] asks for God's blessings on the American people so that, together with all people of good will, a world of peace and justice can be built," the Vatican's chief spokesman said.

Pope Benedict

"Barack Obama's election is a testimony to his exceptional leadership abilities. Above all, his election demonstrates America's extraordinary capacity to renew itself and adapt to a changing world."

Kofi Annan, former United Nations secretary-general

"With the world in turmoil and doubt, the American people, faithful to the values that have always defined America's identity, have expressed with force their faith in progress and the future. At a time when we must face huge challenges together, your election has raised enormous hope in France, in Europe and beyond."

Nicolas Sarkozy, French president

"Barack Obama ran an inspirational campaign, energising politics with his progressive values and his vision for the future. I know Barack Obama and we share many values. We both have determination to show that government can act to help people fairly through these difficult times facing the global economy."

Gordon Brown, Prime Minister

"Your victory is an inspiration for us. That which appeared impossible has become possible."

Yulia Tymoshenko, Ukrainian prime minister

"I have a huge amount of respect for the candidates and I was very happy and proud to see Obama at the front, and congratulations to him."

Lewis Hamilton, Formula One's first black champion

Living an hours drive from the US border i have been in the US a lot and found the people there are very nice people. It is the Media and the politicians that gives the world the impression that the people there are war like and arrogant, they are not. If you are
Scottish or Irish you are their best friends. Not English though. The people there did not want a war.

I notice that the likes of Lynne and Sandy have gone awfully quiet. Maybe they've taken my advice and emigrated to Mexico.

As for that creeping crawler and war criminal, Maggie Broon, how does he square his support of the war criminal Bush with his welcoming of a man who is liable to get his country out of illegal wars?

GugaII, and Rob Bennett, I have commented on other articles, but have been holding myself back from talking to morons like you. The two of you behave like 2 year olds. You just want to gloat. I have said, this election has shown just what a great country America is. Why it should matter to you who our President is is beyond me...I could give a fig who your PM is. I certainly would not tell you who to vote for, and I don't know how your gov'ts work, any more than you do mine.. as shown by your previous posts. The fact that more millions of people got out to vote this year, just goes to show the rest of the world, that apathy is gone. We Care. The election was not a blowout or a landslide by any means... but this man won.
Now, we have to see how he will present himself. He owes a lot of people favors from Moveon.Org, to George Soros, and the many loony left who got him elected.
Who is he going to pay first? And how far left does he intend to go? Time will tell, we will see.. Maybe then he will show us who he really is.. I am not alone in thinking this way.. He has no record to speak of, and so most people are in the dark about him.
And there are many who are worried about his policies.
That doesn't make them wrong.. that makes them care.
The next couple of years will be very interesting to say the least.
Get one thing straight, both of you. I DON'T HIDE FROM EITHER ONE OF YOU.. I just can't stand crass, common people who have no respect for anyone. You both answer that description.
I am sure the first thing that Obama does that you don't like, you 2 will be the first on these posts to denigrate and demean him like you do the Republicans and the Independents.

" Why it should matter to you who our President is is beyond me".

Lynne, that statement should disqualify you from commenting on anything in regard to political affairs.

If you didn't know, the current financial fiasco initiated by the lack of responsible regulation in your country is creating serious problems on a world-wide basis.

Additionally, in large part, the fiasco has also been created by the idiotic policy of the Bush administration in illegaly going to war on the Iraqi people that is wasting billions of dollars. Not to mention the incompetent prosecution of the operation in Afghanistan.

Every day we see reports of innocent people, including children, blown to pieces by US armaments.

If you believe most of the civilised world condones this type of behaviour, you are wrong.

And you say it is beyond you that it matters to anyone else who is running your country.

That is a statement of a completely naive person.

Obviously you are somewhat miffed at the election of Obama but how ANYONE could do a worse job of running your country than those who have had that responsibility for the last eight years, IS BEYOND ME.

Hear hear. Lynne only ever sees one side of the argument. Her side is always Right.

As to "Why it should matter to you who our President is ...?" To have to pose that question in the first instance amplifies what I said above. It matters a great deal to the rest of the world who the American President is, as recent dire events demonstrate.

US battles overseas, propped up by suckered European allies, the needless loss and maiming of lives, and global financial meltdown should do for starters, if Lynne can remove the blinkers and think outside of her capsule.

Many of us have tried to reason with Lynne, but the blinders are firmly welded in place and she's not aware of anything outside of the US borders and too narrowminded to be bothered to look. Same can be said for Sandi and Carolyn 1.
And what has happened to 57Nomad, he seems to have fallen by the wayside now that his hero will soon vacate the White House and that McCain won't be taking over. 57Nomad has always been all show and no go, and this election brought out the true colours in him.

#22 Enquiring Scot ,
If you're asking that question then you must be pretty thick, for the Iraq war is illegal and the Canadian presence in Afghanistan is due to shady doings of the Bush Administration. Both wars should immediately be ended.

Lynne, Lynne, Lynne, Where to start with you?
How is it possible that you can't see what is so clear to the rest of the world and in fact the majority of Americans?
You're present Administration has totally ruined your economy and has managed to take many of the world players down with them. Your illegal war in Iraq has caused suffering to untold thousands and your foreign affairs policy has brought the terrorists to your shores. Your government is guilty of the worst war crimes and terrorism on a global scale.
The war your Administration started in Afghanistan was also started under false pretenses and the gullible NATO allies got suckered into something that was your country's doing and now they feel they have to ride it out to save face.
The Bush Administration is also guilty of torturing suspects yet of all people and Bush made sure that they will continue to carry out this unspeakable practice which eventually will backfire when members of your military get caught by the enemy and they in turn will get tortured as a measure of revenge.
So Lynne, if at all possible, wake up and see how blessed your country is by now having Obama as your next president who will make the USA the great country it was so many years ago.
Let's hope that he won't get shot like they did to the last great president you had by the name of Kennedy.

PM55..I have said over and over, I and the rest of the Independents and Republicans will give this man a chance.. everyone has to..
But when I said I don't care who you pick for President.. it is because I can do nothing about it.
All of you rant and rave about Bush. BDS lives on..
Who cares..
you all have been told about the Judicial Branch, Legislative, and Executive Branches of gov't, and who does what... who is responsible for what... but you don't care.. You are so blindsided by hate.. that you shove all the blame on to Bush..There is enough blame to go around for everyone.
The fact that the House and the Senate has been in Democratic hands for the past 2 years means nothing to you... the fact that the economy is in the tank is because of the Democrats means nothing to you.. They lied to the American people as late as 2 months before the collapse.
The fact that this all came about because of the entitlements by Dems means nothing to you..
What do you read? This has been going on since 1999. It didn't happen overnight. So grow up.. Mow it's the automakers and the unions who want Congress to DOUBLE what they already recieved.. the Corporations are in a long line for handouts.
Stocks hammered yesterday.. the money given to the banks is not being used for what it is intended for.
Is Barak Obama going to help all of them?

I am tired of the bull about illegal wars.. and war criminals.. There have been no more attacks here in 7 years. And every terrorist organization backs Obama.. why? Because they think he is weak.. that he is and will be easier to bamboozle. Great. Just like Carter.
The bloom will be off the rose soon enough.

#26 Lynne,
Well for starters Lynne, we here in China are privileged that we don't have to pick our leader(s), that gets done all by itself and we don't waste time and money doing it and we also aren't fed empty election promises.
You guys always point fingers at the ones that make it in if they aren't your choice, and rightly so, because dirty politics are at play in any election in any country in the world, and this last one of yours is no exception. But the fact remains that Obama got elected and McCain didn't, and the rest of the world considers that a good thing, for we are tired of your bullying of us with your 'Democratic' ways and we believe Obama to be a fair, honest and level headed man who will seek out proper advice so that he won't make the mistakes your present Administration is guilty of having made.
And you are right when you say the global meltdown didn't happen overnight, it took old Georgie boy eight years to accomplish that, and he was responsible for that through an illegal war that drove up oil prices which drove up everything else, it doesn't get any clearer than that.

The true reason for the economic meltdown in your country and most of the world is the illegal war that is waging in Iraq as we speak, a war brought on by the Bush Administration and entered through blatant lies of weapons of mass destruction, alo brought about by the worst president your country has ever seen, George W. Bush.
This war is what drove up the price of oil in most places and when the price of oil goes up everything will eventually follow suit and that's exactly what did happen. Nobody or nothing could sustain those prices for long and therefore the total ecomonic meltdown. This happened on Bush's watch and because of him and his Administration, bottom line. Can Obama solve all the problems? That remains to be seen but I believe that he will give it an honest effort, but it may cost him his life, as was the case with Kenndy. There are many who want to stay the course of American policies and it will take a team effort to clean it up, but it will never all get cleared up, the corruption and rot went up far too high.

That's an outright lie being told to the country by the Republicans who want to lay blame on the Democrats, where in fact it all started with the illegal invasion and subsequent illegal war in Iraq which caused oil prices and every other price to spiral out of control and it was all due to Bush and his Administration, no matter what the Republican's spin and lies on it are.
You're looking at a 10 trillion+ deficit, 1 trillion to us here in China and somewhere around a trillion having been spent on the illegal war in Iraq, again all of it happening on Bush's watch. He and his Administration have held power for the last eight years and all of the damage came on their watch, end of story. Quit denying the obvious and quit trying to think that we're all naive and stupid. It's all on Bush's shoulders, the whole works.

Don't think so.

The sub-prime loans were cut up into little pieces and sold all over the world, thus poisoning the well. They were the starting point. Then the dominoes began to fall and credit stopped. Has nothing to do with oil, if it did we would be back to normal as oil is down.

You need to do a little more homework on that first recession, it happened during his term, but was due to policies handed down from Clinton. Recessions don't happen that quick.

The curent recession can also be attributed to Clinton and Carter with their sub-prime loans. There is a good chance we would not be in recession now if those loans never existed. Don't get me wrong, the GOP certainly compounded the problem, but the dems created it.

Hence if you blame Bush for all the woes, then you are not being truthful with yourself and others.

Yes indeed, the price of oil has fallen but it is still double that of when Bush was handed the reins and just because oil has come down in price now doesn't necessarily mean that everything else will soon follow suit. The rapid rise in oil prices hammered everything and the fallout from that will take years to undo. Once you lose your house you just can't go back in a couple of weeks to reclaim it, it isn't that simple and the markets are all on edge now and will be that way for years to come. Once the fire is put out there is still the damage to deal with and the damage in this case is severe.
What is very simple to figure out though is that all of this happened on Bush's watch, for before the Iraq war everything was in pretty good shape, but after the illegal invasion and subsequent illegal and ongoig war in Iraq the wheels started wobbling and eventually came off completely, and if you've been following my posts here in the last 3 or 4 months I had warned the likes of Lynne and 57Nomad about this but they just snickered and scoffed me and said that everything was shipshape with your economy. Bottom line is that it is on Bush's shoulders which is so plain to see.

#51 SouthernGent,
Who started and when your economic mess started is really neither here or there but the one who could have done something about it for the past 8 years in fact compounded the problems by starting 2 wars, one of which is illegal and which is causing suffering to untold millions and which in turn will cost trillions to your people when all is said and done.
Now all eyes are cast to Obama to somehow magically get you all out of this mess, sonething that I believe he can do given two full terms and an honest team effort and no infighting by Replubicans who'll want to hold him back if not indeed getting him assassinated.
If your choice had gotten the nod he would have needed 4 terms to do the job and probably would have made the situation even worse.
The key to success for your country lies in ending the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and getting down to the job at hand and that is to fix your country, everything else needs to be put on the back burner. If you quit interfering globally then you will also see terrorism to your country coming to an end for all they want over there is to be left alone and indeed that's what they deserve. They have enough on their plate to deal with and they will sort out their own problems given time, just like you will with yours.
