SUSAN Boyle has "no hope in hell" of finding peace in her home town, as the ongoing media clamour over her welfare and future shows no sign of abating, friends warned yesterday.
Having been catapulted from anonymity to worldwide fame in less than two months, the 48-year-old was admitted to a London clinic on Sunday evening, suffering from exhaustion.

The singer, who is expected to recuperate in the Priory for several days, received a message of support yesterday from Prime Minister Gordon Brown, two days after finishing runner-up in the Britain's Got Talent television show.

Neighbours in Blackburn, West Lothian, have appealed to her to return home to receive support. However, there are fears the remarkable international media attention paid to the singer since her first appearance on the programme on 11 April will only increase.

Jackie Russell, manager of Ms Boyle's local pub, the Happy Valley Hotel, told The Scotsman that the show's production company, Talkback Thames, did not properly anticipate the worldwide reaction to Ms Boyle.

"She is just an ordinary girl from an ex-mining village who could walk down the street a few months ago quite happily," Ms Russell said. "Now, she can't even come home. Everyone in Blackburn is exhausted with the media attention, and the press always know where she'll be, and who she's with. There's not a hope in hell she'd get peace here.

"The media has reported she had a meltdown because she didn't win, but not winning had nothing to do with it. She's a very gracious lady and wouldn't take losing to heart."

The Prime Minister told GMTV yesterday he had sought reassurances from the show's judges that Ms Boyle was well.

Ms Boyle's brother, Gerry, said his sister remains happy and just needs to "get her head around" celebrity; but Fred O'Neil, her friend and former voice coach, called her plight "a tragedy", claiming fame had not brought her happiness.

He said: "It's such a tragic situation, a woman who really just loves to sing, an innocent woman really, who is just caught up in this fame game."

Publicist Max Clifford agreed that, no matter the result of Saturday night's final, Ms Boyle would have struggled to cope with her sudden rise to fame.

Stressing the need for her to be surrounded by friends and family, he said: "What they've got to do is assess how she is before knowing what's best to do."

Piers Morgan, one of the show's judges, said Ms Boyle's admission to the clinic was "not a very serious matter", and predicted she would be recording the year's biggest-selling album in a few months.

"I don't think she wants to go back to Scotland and disappear again," he added.

Plans are well advanced for Ms Boyle to play a US tour, before recording an album with the Czech National Symphony Orchestra. She is also due to join the Britain's Got Talent arena tour, which begins on 12 June.

Opportunity still knocks for the unexpected star to win through

THERE is a lot of stress for contestants in such shows, writes Cynthia McVey.

There is the stress of trying to produce the best performance they can, and for Susan Boyle there was also the stress created by the assumption that she was going to win.

When she entered the show she probably thought she would have been lucky to get through – then suddenly everything changed because of the attention from America.

I don't think you can really blame the show's producers, because it is just the nature of these competitions.

I assume they would have had some sort of psychological testing to make sure the people taking part were not too vulnerable and would not be affected too badly by the stress of the contest.

It has been reported that Susan Boyle has some learning difficulties, but I don't believe that, just because a person has learning difficulties, they should not be allowed to take part in competitions on television.

At the moment Susan Boyle might be feeling rejected by the public, but with the right sort of support she should still be able to enjoy the fruits of her talents.

• Cynthia McVey is head of psychology at Glasgow Caledonian University and an adviser to television producers.

It is called the,...'Price-of-Fame'!, and historic moments, you will never change.
Susan has a bright prosperous future ahead of her now, the question is,..,'Can-She-Handle-It'?
I think that Susan could 'handle-it', if given the correct care and attention, and guidance that she needs Right Now.
To do it on her own, and with people that do not have the best of interest for Susan, I fear the whole scenario, could well, 'wreck-her-life'.

Well, I will wish Susan Boyle all my best wishes and hope that with a short break from the whirlwind of the past 7 weeks allows her to get well again. We cannot imagine how stressful it is to go from being a private person to a world superstar in such a short space of time, even more so if you are of a vulnerable quiet nature.

Let her have the peace to sing her songs and produce her albums and give her the financial security that she now deserves. I am sure I express the sentiments of all decent thinking people.

She is such a genuine person and she brought a great deal of happiness all around the world this spring when everything else was gloom. We dreamed the dream with you. You are in all our thoughts.

Absolutely!, Susan just needs the right people beside her now!
It would be of a great shame, If Susan could never again, be able to share her Awesome talent as a Singer, with All of us.

I'm saddened by the lack of compassion and the mean spiritedness of some of the comments here. I don't think anyone can know what it feels like to go from quiet anonymity to having your name known around the globe overnight, with cameras and microphones constantly in your face and every aspect of your life under a microscope - let alone "knowing full well what it involves". Cut the woman some slack, for pity's sake, and treat her with some kindness.

Best wishes, Susan Boyle. You just wanted to be able to sing. I hope when all is said and done that you get to do it and that you have a good, happy life.

i would just like to commetn on Cynthia McVey;s remakrs. Learning difficulties? what are you talking about apart from possible your own to be a second rate hack on this rapidly degenerating newspaper. You mention that Ms. Boyle's chances of getting through to the second round after her initial appearance suddenly changed because of the interest fro m the USA. What rot!, as soon as the lady in question appeared on stage and was subject to ridicule before silencing everyone with the voice of an angel she was the forerunner for the competition with a truly amazing true talent. I'm sure Ms. Mcvey would only wish to god to be given an equal talent as a writer....but clearly, in the abscence of such, she might perhaps wish to think just a wee bit before submitting such rubbish to her editor...as for whom...

I'm sure all her high profile new friends will be rallying round the pizza headed angel right now. Demi, Oprah, and so on. Clearly her old friends and family were no use - letting her go on this show in the first place.

I think it's time to leave her be now, and see if she can return to her normal life. If she can't, I don't see how her family and so called friends can live with themselves.

#2 & #4 ... I'd like to see people like you try to cope with the enormous pressure SuBo has been under! And that pressure has been not been felt by any individual since time began on this planet.
200million hits on YouTube and upwards of 120million comments saying she will win.
And she's just a wee wummin with a big voice from a village in Scotland even many Scots had never heard of.

Give her a break! She already had problems BGT didn't know about ... and the vultures of the media got into a frenzy that exarcebated Susan's existing fragile yet manageable state.

Look at her peformance at her audition ... and then the Final, and you can clearly see her deterioration in the space of two months!

Her critics need to back off and BGT need to help people for the kind of fame Ms Boyle was totally unprepared for!

Leave her alone to recover ... and attack BGT producers and the Media vultures instead!!!

#2 ...Jock, (got caught off before the final line) ...

...but in honesty, one must admit that a consdierable ammount of what you state is as they say "the uncomfortable truth" ?
What consideration and thoughts were given to the potential backlash of lavishing so much attention and media hype onto this poor girl, knowing quite well the undeniable British Culture of " let's get them up ..so we can knock them down" attitude.

Personally I find the whole show bas enough, and only irritatingly increased by that Cowell clown and those two North England Hobbits.

Lets be honest, the show does present some talented people but then again a lot of dubious charecters willing to make a complete fool of themselves ...aka a certain one who ..if he was a concerned parent he should be taking steps to control his sons obesity rather than making him a source of laughter.

But with the direction of these programs and the viewing public ever increasing requirement to be entertianed without thought effort ...I wait in anticipation for the arrival of Bear Baiting or a return to feeding Cristians to the Lions TV Spectaculars !!!

Rubbish!

I'll give it about a fortnight before the stupid hysteria dies down. In six month's time, we'll all be saying "who's Susan Boyle?"

I bet no-one can name all the winners and second places in this pathetic reality karaoke show, since it began... Without looking them up of course.

I’m impressed. I thought that this type of vitriolic attacks on this web site were reserved solely for paedophiles and committed Christians.
Shame on you all. A lovely wee lady who has done never done anyone any harm. Her only crimes are to not fall into society’s ‘normal’ pigeon holes and. and to want to better herself by serving the public with her beautiful singing. She has never received much out of life and only wants to give some back.
Perhaps if she had been a homosexual minister who had broken her vows, and left her married partner and child and whose actions wants to wreck the church, then you might have had more sympathy. You’re all heart the lot of you.

#2 Jock, what the hell do you mean by saying she knew 'full well what it involved'? An unprecedented interest on the web, a load of reproters camped out in a town most of them probably couldn't have found on a map without a Google-map (and probably thought Scotland was a district of north Newcastle)and then smug, snide scumbags like you making judgemental comments.

Lets face it, how many of the winners of any of these programmes got that kind of attention even when they won. She got it after 1 appearance. There are stars and celebrities who have worked in the field for years and invite such attention who would have cracked under that kind of attention, so I fail to see how someone who didn't even know what Youtube was can 'know full well'.

As for your comments about learning difficulties, I suppose you'd like them all locked up in special homes where you don't have to see them... those 'useless eaters' (as Hitler called them). Just exactly what are these learning difficulties, SB has anyway. It's a phrase which has been bandied around but never clarified. "Learning Difficulties" can cover a number of things. And anyway, why shouldn't someone with learning difficulties be allowed on a TV talent show? Let's face it, someone lets a vegetable like you near a computer.

I said it would all end in tears on my Sunday posting but little did I know how quickly.Best thing she can do is get back home and forget it ever happened. That Simon Cowell would do anything to make a fast buck and she should stay well clear of him.The lady`s not " up to it " so let her get back and get on with her life as it was but the genie might be out the lamp now.Just tragic really.

What a lot of horrible people some of you are. This is a woman who hasn't led a traditionally normal life. By that alone she isn't very worldly..so what.. nothing wrong with that. She has more talent in her little finger that most of us could ever dream of. All the fame and attention would be hard for anyone no matter how strong to cope with, it is bound to have an affect on someone that has lived a pretty sheltered life. I agree with a little time and the right guidance and not overtaxing herself she could get a chance at some of the things in life she has missed out on. You only get one life...none of us want to get to old age and realize they have missed out on so much..it would be a terrible shame. I wish Susan all the best.

It was obvious that Susan Boyle’s personality was at least fragile and unfortunately, her personal attributes were noticed and seized upon by the English TV audience – and not for the correct reasons. Those old enough will remember watching television in the 60s and 70s, whenever there was a Scottish person on a drama – they were always a foul mouthed and violet drunk ; someone to be sneered, mocked and laughed at. I’m not suggesting that Susan Boyle is foul mouthed or a violent drunk, but this goes back to a day when the fickle and insecure English Saturday night TV audience had something quick and undemanding to laugh at. The English media loved this and perpetrated this.

I think you should be in the next bed to Susan in the Priory, they should be able to do something with your English phobia, though I wouldnt count on it !

Look its not Brain surgery she is doing, no-one dies if she decides to go home and surrounds herself with family and friends, it is only a talent show, she`s been coached, stayed in some fine hotels, eaten some fine food, and she`s been on stage three times, its nerve wracking but its not digging a ditch.

I hope Susan gets well, has a holiday, and then fulfills her ambition to sing, become`s rich and meet a man who will love her, and if it is partly because of the English, then good !

I look forward to a long and prosperous career for Susan. I am not sure that there has ever been in history a stranger that so many people wished well. I don't know of anyone who is not moved by her story. Here in America, we all want her dream to come true. I have been on enough sites to know that some of you don't care what we think in America. I, too, deplored much of what our government did the past eight years. We are in much better hands with Barack Obama. I hope most of you can look beyond that and realize that America is full of nice, kind people who look at the UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and other English speaking countries as friends. Our common language links us. We wish Susan the very best. I truly believe wonderful things will happen for her. At the least, she should be able to earn enough money to have a secure future.
