ALL Woolworths' stores will shut by January 5, administrators confirmed today.
Deloitte said around 200 of the company's 807 stores would close by December 27, followed by a second batch of 200 on December 30, 200 on January 2 and the final closures on January 5.

The moves will affect 22,000 permanent staff and 5,000 temporary workers, although some will be kept on for a short period.

Deloitte said it had received interest from other retailers for 300 Woolworths stores.

The corporate recovery firm confirmed the closure plan after failing to secure a buyer for the business.

Deloitte is set to flood stores with 50 million extra items over the next week in the final run-up to Christmas. Discounts already running at up to 60% will be even heavier as the administrator looks to clear stock.

Signs in stores will also show a countdown to their final closure dates to encourage shoppers as Woolies' staff brace themselves for redundancies.

Joint administrator Neville Khan said: "I guess it is a very difficult situation for a lot of people, particularly the staff, and we are trying to deal with it in as sensitive a way as possible."

But he raised hopes that jobs could be saved, saying that – as far as possible under privacy laws – Deloitte would pass on the details of current Woolies employees to the buyers of the stores.

Mr Khan also revealed that administrators are in talks over the sale of Woolworths trademark and its Worth It! value brand, meaning that the famous retailer may not disappear from the high street altogether in the long term.

"I think Woolworths will come back on to the high street... whether it will remain into the early part of 2009, that is not so certain," he added.

Gordon Brown should be first on the list of redundancies. How many more livelyhoods will be destroyed before this man is taken to task?

Woolworth's was particularly vulnerable because of its debt position but its downfall so early in the economic downturn sounds a warning bell which seems to echo eerily in the Government's empty idea cupboard.

If sensible action is not taken urgently to address the situation, we are going to see more closures as these megalithic retailers cut back on their marginal and loss-making stores. Remoter communities which have seen their traditional food shops forced out of business by the predatory tactics of the large supermarkets are particularly vulnerable and it is quite possible that basic food essentials will cease to be available in many rural areas within the next twelve months.

#1 and #2 Yes its all Gordon Browns fault.

Mind you its only Gordon Browns fault within the mind of warped NatZ like yourselves.

It has been one of the coldest Decembers since records began.
It's all Gordon Browns fault.

What about the Strictly Come Dancing phone voting fiasco?
It's all Gordon Browns fault.

What about Boy George being jailed?
It's all Gordon Browns fault.

You pair should get down to Specsavers to see if there is a cure for your tunnel vision.

The Spook in Leith
The Woollies in Leith resembles a Moscow supermarket in the 80,s, bare shelving and hardly any goods.
=========================================================
Spook that whole area of Leith resembles downtown Moscow. In fact you are paying Moscow a disservice. It is more like downtown Baghdad.

The last time I was down the Kirkgate Shopping Centre, there were 2 men having a fight in the middle of the afternoon.

What a place.

I suppose you think that it’s all Wee Fat Ecks fault!

No comments on the unemployment figures and the SNP defending innocent pensioners - You know what happened to the herald. Its website is being renamed the "Mandy Celeste".

I assume the lead for this came from labour HQ (it is in London). Please ignore them -if you don't the consequences will be grave.

Mr Wagstaff I am sure that you are as much a professor as Mr Murphy (scottish labour placeman)is a graduate.

I am indebted to the poster who regularly points out :

Gordon Brown, the international fool, embarassement and cause of the greatrest fall of sterling in history has made the following statement:

'a weak currency is the sign of a weak economy and of a weak government'

The IMF are attacking him, the German's are laughing at him, Mervin King today admitted that Broon's bailout is not working and he has sold the post office...what a great day for the UK.

Only Iceland has performed worse, the UK is the laughing stock of Europe and the world and soon Brown will be begging the IMF for a bailout..what a clown!

Brown must go down in history as not only in the top ten of Scoland's most embarassing unionist quislings but also the worst Prime Minister the country has ever had, the worst Chancellor in the history of the UK...no wonder he bites the nails on his sticky little hands!

#4 Fake professor geezer

It has been one of the coldest Decembers since records began.
It's all Gordon Browns fault. This is true for many pensioners who can't afford to pay to heat their homes thanks to gordon browns and Labours pilicies. True

What about the Strictly Come Dancing phone voting fiasco?
It's all Gordon Browns fault. If the Labour government didn't allow companies like this to rip off the public with premium rate phone lines this would not have happened so yes in a way it is Gordon Browns fault...and the Idiots who pay to vote what's that about?

What about Boy George being jailed?
It's all Gordon Browns fault. I will give you this one but I fail to see the relevance.

Can anyone tel me anything you could buy in Woollies that you could not get online cheaper or at about the same price?

Woolworths became a corner shop on the High Street and outlived its trading lifespan curve.

RIP

#11 Agree 100%, Jock.

Woolies had it's day and failed to move on when all the others did. It's a shame, but they won't be the only casualty and it's another one of life's 'constants' gone forever.

Once again, it's shameful that certain people try and hijack a comment board and fill it with Nat/Unionist claptrap!

Spook you fool, I was born in Leith.

I am down there all the time, so once again you are well wide of the mark.

Where were you born?

Hey spook have you seen this?

"UK To Follow Face Swap Success

Doctors in the UK say they are getting closer to perform the world's first full-face transplant."

Get your name down quick.

You could maybe get yourself a Ken Dodd or a Donald Trump. Either one would be an improvement on what you have got.

19 Spook, I just logged on again that was why I had the gap. Two young kids to feed, bathe, get to bed etc

20 Spook, now you are talking. Cramond is a superb place. As is Murrayfield. Leith is still a dump though.

Spook, I can assure you I was born there and spent my early years there. Just at the site where Leith Waterworld is (it used to be Tenements there).

I think the place has a long way to go. Last time I was out at a party there, the Taxi company refused to come and pick us up in the early hours of the morning. We had to walk up to the Foot of Leith Walk to get one.

Spook,

Located in The Ocean Terminal Shopping Centre on Ocean Drive, Vue Ocean Terminal is a 12 screen cinema with approximately 2,747 seats.

HOWEVER, do you think that makes it the biggest in the Europe? In fact do you even think it makes it the biggest in the UK?
