Strange world
SPAIN is demanding a that a United States deep-sea exploration firm turns over the entire £255 million treasure it salvaged from a shipwreck, saying it has determined the vessel is definitely Spanish.

James Goold, a Washington-based lawyer who rep
resents the Spanish government, said the 19th-century shipwreck at the heart of a dispute with Odyssey Marine Exploration is without a doubt the Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes – a Spanish frigate sunk by a British warship south-west of Portugal in 1804. He said the Spanish government has presented evidence to back up its claim to a US federal judge hearing the case in Tampa, Florida, where Odyssey is based.

Spain also argues the entire treasure should be returned, as it was never really abandoned.

Odyssey announced in May last year that it had discovered the wreck in the Atlantic and raised 500,000 silver coins and other artefacts. The booty was flown back to Tampa.

Spain went to the US federal court to claim ownership of the treasure if it turned out to be connected to the country's national heritage.

Mr Goold said at a news conference yesterday that Spain's evidence proved the ship and cargo were definitely Spanish property.

The Spaniards stole it fair and square from the Mexican and Peruvian tribes, so give it back. It was hard work killing off millions of Incas and Aztecs, beside the effort involved in enslaving the survivors and supervising the mining all that treasure.

Over a hundred years has passed, it was found in international waters. Finders Keepers, Loosers Weepers.

If it's really all about being "connected to the country's national heritage" then Spain should pay fair market value for it. I'm sure it was not cheap for the Odyssey to loacate it nad salvage the loot.

As expected, the angloamerican press is busy resurrecting the Black Legend against Spain in order to defend the acts of piracy of a company of robbers ( Oddysey). To start with, the Spanish colonial record is far more human - given the times, we are talking about the early modern Era- than the British one. The Spanish built towns, schools and universities for the Indians and passed laws to protect them. The British simply massacred them or reduced them to reservations ( concentration camps). If there has been ever a genocidal and robbers' Empire, that was the British Empire. If you say that Spain has to give back the ship's money to Peru then the UK has to return all the wealth it has looted to half of the world. You are simply a bunch of hypocrites.

Give it back by all means ... to the descendants of the tribes the Spanish stole it from in the first place!!

YOU GO, Mark - great point!

So why would thieves (the Spanish) complain when someone steals from them?

King Juan Carlos of Spain steals from me every time I drive Highway 407 across Toronto.

It's salvage or treasure trove, Mr. Goold. You ought to know the law - as you're claiming to be a lawyer representing the interests of Spain.

If Spain can prove ownership in a federal court - and that's subject to disagreement - then let them pay to get it back.
