ANGOLA'S government has accused anti-poverty activist Bob Geldof of disrespect and ignorance for saying the southern African nation was run by criminals and served only the rich.
The Irish rock star made the comments on Tuesday at a conference in Lisbon.

Angolan deputy prime minister Aguinaldo Jaime said Geldof, 56, did not understand the realities of life in Angola. "His remarks seem to me completely unfair and should be rejected," Mr Jaime said in the state-run Jornal de Angola on Thursday.

Rights groups and international agencies have accused Angola's government of siphoning away billions in oil revenue.

What would Bob Geldof know about poverty in Africa, he needs to live and work there, and not fly into countries, live in 5* accomodation and have 5 course dinners and then denounce poverty and starvation in Africa - IT A BIT HYPOCRITICAL

WHAT WOULD YOU EXPECT FRON A BOG TROTTER ANYWAY!!!!

"the southern African nation was run by criminals and served only the rich."

Sounds like a typical African country.

Bob Geldof may be ignorant and a bit slow but he's hardly wrong about this one!

#3. I would hazard a guess that he (Geldof) probably knows more about the situation than you or I.

Angola should prove him wrong then. Invest the money in the country and the people!

the problem isnt that Mr Geldof shoots off his pie hole....

or that he may "know" something that we dont...

its that by their very nature a MULTI MILLIONAIRE artiste have such an ephemeral grasp on reality that they think that their PROPER place in the universe is to...

protest global warming
protest nuclear energy
protest overpopulation in china
protest UNDERpopulation in china
protest foreign governments
protest their OWN governments
protest drilling for oil around environmentally sensitive areas...

protesting just about anything

but lacking the fortitude to actually DO anything about the things they protest...

they are rediculous... and need to "just shut up and SING"... nobody cares about their politics...

As one who ACTUALLY lives in Angola, (and has done for 8 years) trust me, Mr Geldoff is right on the mark.

As for Jacobite from Invergordon, a lot of what you say is true, but keep your racist comments to yourself.

Angola is........ Angola isn't........ not the point.

The ubiquitous Mr. Geldorf was speaking at a conference and styles himself as an 'anti-poverty activist'. In that context, his comment was less than helpful.

Which is the problem with entertainers becoming advocates. Foot-in-mouth disease.

sorry John I dont agree, as I consider his comments to be very helpfull. Especially to the people of Angola with no voice of their own.
Mike I take your comments obn board. However when does the size of someones bank ballance affect what they say and believe. Mr geldof almost bankrupted himself during the Live Aid (First one) period. He has the ability to gain access to the upper echelons of power and make his point very eloquently. If he upsets a rogue government... so be it, but dont prevent his ability to do so.

The Hiker,Kilconquhar

There was no racist comment about Geldof but he would do well to invest in a comb and smarten himself up a bit especially if he wants to be heard.

But being smart was never one of Bob Geldof;s traits
