BANNING smoking completely in Beijing is "impossible" but the city will do its best to ensure a smoke-free environment for the Olympics, officials said yesterday.
New regulations ban smoking in sports venues, parks, on public transport and in schools but restaurants and hotels are exempted.

'BANNING smoking completely in Beijing is "impossible" ...'

Not so. It is entirely possible. As in Scotland, Hong Kong achieved it without fuss in 2006 and it's a pleasure to eat (and breathe) in HK restaurants these days. Well done Hong Kong.

Unlike continental Europe though, where smoking is still regarded as part of the "culture". I spent a choking month in Hungary recently and my (totally unscientific) survey figured that 90+ percent of the population smokes. Yuk.

Some way to go yet, rest of the world.

They are never going to get the Chinese to stop smoking (without the thugs from the PLA threatening them), nor are they going to be able to stop them spitting in the street. So, don't try coming the holier than thou attitude; it doesn't wash.

That reminds me of that Spike Milligan ditty:

There was a young man from Darjeeling,
That boarded a bus at Ealing,
It said on the door,
Do not spit on the floor,
So he stood up and spat on the ceiling.

Why should any government want to ban smoking when they all can get so much tax income from cigarettes?

If they really want to be honest, cancel all taxes on cigarettes, and just ban them.

But, why should smokers be bothered? Even if draconian penalties were imposed for smoking, could they be any worse than cigarettes themselves can impose? Sickness, cancer, even death?

However, I'll just refer you to Fanling's post. It was done in Hong Kong and can be done elsewhere.

The smoking ban means little. Athletes and visitors to Beijing are many times more likely to fall ill with the regular pollution which is not caused by tobacco smoke.
12

Robert Feal-Martinez,

Swindon 25/04/2008 09:08:23
How amusing, a smoke ban enacted in Scotland without a problem. What a laugh, thousands of signatures on Petitions, a very active pressure group, still fighting. freedom2choose.info, and thousands now seeing their lives destroyed, many being non smokers who have lost their jobs, and for what, an increase in smoking. Some success story that is.
13

Mashimaro,

25/04/2008 09:21:35
#11 You spew more pollution than drifts around Beijing. Athletes will not get ill, this is just a dumb rumour. You have to be in this pollution a lot longer than they will to get ill. The pollution will lighten when the factories are shut down. Now...SHOO!

I notice you didn't make any comment about the habit the Chinese have of spitting in the street. Why is that?

As for Hong Kong, they still smoke and spit in the streets too. Maybe they don't do it any longer in tourist hotels, but they still do it.

I also like your admission that "Despotic pariah thugs might run China". As I told you before, you are destined to remain as a low level political cadre when you make statements like that about your masters. They could even end up taking your internet privileges away, and treat you like an ordinary Chinese, i.e. worse than a dog.

Incidentally with you claim that it's all China, including Vietnam, Laos and Korea, I assume that that is an open admission that your gangster government wants to lay claim to all the Asian and South-East Asian countries, and not just Tibet? You already claim Inner Mongolia, and no doubt you'll be adding Outer Mongolia to the list soon enough. This is all too much like "Ein Volk, Ein Reich", isn't it? Even Mousey Dung never went that far.

Thank you Mashimoron for confirming that Red China IS indeed run by despotic pariah thugs.

I hope that these self same despotic pariah thugs that you obviously act as an agent for approve of your confirmation. I have sent this thread by e-mail to the People's Daily to ask them to print it. I've even translated it for them!
Please keep us informed (if you can) about how the despotic pariah thugs react to your description. After all you claim that these self same despotic pariah thugs allow free speech!

And how right you were ... the mere word "China" is blue touch paper to the predictables whose argument is based on shouting insults over and again. Reason goes out of the window when hysteria is the name of the game. I feel embarrassed for Scotland when I read some of the more unreasoned crap regularly posted here. Anybody can hurl insults. Not everybody can conduct - or is prepared to conduct - a sensible rational argument, as it abundantly appears on here.

Sorry to hear you are an addict to nicotine. Personally I can't stand the stench, not just the smell of the smoke, the worst part is the odor that sticks to the smoker that you guys can't smell because you lost most of your sense of smell. The odor on your hands and the odor coming from your lungs long after your last fag is awful.

I could really care less about the extra time on this earth I’m going to get by banning of rude people smoking in pubic, I’m just glad the awful odor is not as bad as it was. They should pass a new law where people have to blow into a tube before entering pubic places and if the machine detects the stench of a fag because you have smoked in the past 10 minutes it won’t let you in.

"The Chinese smoke during their meals. I kid you not"

Sensational. Here's a correction: SOME Chinese (males, invariably) smoke during their meals. (I kid you not also.) I find the habit disgusting if I am in range, mainly because I loathe the stink of cigarette smoke, especially when I'm having a meal.

But this persistent use of "The Chinese" really needs to be modified by those that fling it around as if to embrace all. It's a bit like "The Scots", in for example, all eat deep-fried Mars Bars. I never saw a deep-fried Mars Bar in my (Scottish) life nor have I known anyone who has.

Generalisation is a classic get-out when the argument is thin.

Whatever, I am not one and the same anybody you allege
above, even if you personally feel the need to adopt such obvious alternative names. Your disguises are poor, like the vapid comment that gushes out of them.

Stuff your usual Punchdrunk Llama and boycott the Lembit Opik endnotes. My god, you are a pitiful case.

I generally ignore that HC freak-show. Her perception of reality is grounded in histrionics, like her half-dozen screaming bosom buddies on these threads. (Just don't dare to have an opposite view, especially one based on personal experience for it will be twisted out of recognition.)

It seems though that others again are removing her rantings. I don't, preferring that the saner public can see and make its own mind up. Not such a difficult task.
