THE Pope has placed Cardinal John Henry Newman on the path to possible sainthood by approving a miracle attributed to his intercession.
Newman, an influential 19th-century Anglican convert, can now be beatified. A second miracle is necessary for him to be declared a saint – making him the first English-born saint since the Reformation.

The miracle approved yesterday by Pope Benedict XVI concerns the medically inexplicable cure of an American, John Sullivan, who suffered from debilitating back pain for years, but was cured after praying to Cardinal Newman.

In 1841, Cardinal Newman published a paper demonstrating that the doctrinal statements of the Church of England were consistent with Catholicism. Amid outcry from Anglicans, he retired and in 1845 joined the Roman Catholic Church. A year later he was ordained as a priest.

Monsignor Mark Langham, the Vatican official in charge of relations with Anglicans, said the cardinal was a "key figure" for both Churches, responsible for having revived the rich tradition of Anglicanism that stressed the continuity with the old Church.

Mgr Langham added: "(Cardinal Newman] is seen as something of a trailblazer."

Good on you Cardinal Newman. This man of peace gave his entire life trying to reconcile people with differing views. In relation to the Catholic church and the Anglican church,I think that he succeeded!

What a shame that neither of these two false religions are consistant with the teachings of the bible.

Further to my earlier post, I have to say that the Catholic Church has to keep on creating more saints and increasing their profile as so many people are starting to see through the thin facade of decency in which the church covers itself. The seminaries are emptying and people are turning their backs on the richest and most corrupt organisation in the world. Long may that process continue.

There is no mention of any saint in the bible. In fact the bible speaks out against such moves.

(Matthew 6 verse 1) “Take good care not to practice your righteousness in front of men in order to be observed by them; otherwise you will have no reward with your Father who is in the heavens. 2 Hence when you go making gifts of mercy, do not blow a trumpet ahead of you, just as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be glorified by men. Truly I say to you, They are having their reward in full. 3 But you, when making gifts of mercy, do not let your left hand know what your right is doing, 4 that your gifts of mercy may be in secret; then your Father who is looking on in secret will repay you

But don't point this out to the pope.

#8 I think that you should also point it out to the clergy of Protestant churches in Scotland and England many of which are named after Saints. My own Protestant church is called Saint Thomas.

If somebody wants a miracle, why would they pray to some lowly Cardinal? Why don't they go straight to the top honcho and pray to God? It's all a bit iffy to me.

#11 Alba Abu. Actually I have been blocked from posting in the past. Nothing to do with religion, everything to do with slagging off the NuLiebore Sleaze and Corruption Party. I am not intolerant of catholics, some of my best friends are cursed with having been born into that iniquitous religion/cult. I do find great myself hating the Catholic Church of Rome for its hypocricy, greed, falsehood and continuing programme of indoctrination and subjugation. An evil church led by evil men.

Ehrm, don't know how you arrived at that conclusion. I have already stated that I have no problem with people of any religious persuasion, what I DO have a problem with are religions and cults that try to ram their dogma and BS down other people's throats. I dislike almost all organised religions, Islam and the Roman Catholic Church are just two of the easiest targets as they set themselves up to be torn to pieces by people with rational thought as their weapon of choice. Other easy targets would be the Mormon Church and the Jehova's Witnesses. The protestant Church in Scotland are hypocritical too but to a lesser extent as they don't try to run the lives of their parishoners to anything like the same extent. The Wee Frees are another matter, however.

Anyone can become a saint these days if you're in with the right people.
