POLISH police had to rescue a mini-bus driver after his sat-nav directed him into a lake.
After a desperate call from the man saying he was drowning, police in the south-western town of Glubczyce rushed to the scene to find him and his two passengers sitting on the roof of their submerged vehicle.

Officials explained there had been a road there until last year when a water company flooded the valley to make a reservoir. "It appears that his GPS hadn't been updated and it still showed a road running through it," said a police spokesman.

But police did not explain why the driver, who was taken to hospital with shock, ignored "road closed" signs and failed to notice the lake, described as "sizeable".

It's amazing how a few stiff drinks can change someone's perception eh? Blaming the GPS is a good one though, damn technology eh?

Well, maybe, just maybe,if he'd been looking ahead instead of down at the gps,he might have noticed something amiss?

So there had been a road there but the sat nav hadn't been updated eh! some people just follow these things blindly, Ill bet it gave that driver the fright of his life though, cant wait to read the insurance accident claim form.

In central and western Poland you will almost never find a road map or GPS sat-nav that is up to date in view of the new trunk roads that are being built under the EU Trans European Networks programme. You have to be prepared for your GPS directional arrow apparently traversing green fields when you are actually on a new dual carriageway - very confusing. Things are more primitive towards the Russian border, but even there developments are taking place. The surface condition of non-motorway routes and town streets is still generally deplorable.

You know, I'm sure that some drivers don't even bother looking where they are going. All they do is try to keep the little arrow on their GPS screen travelling down the road---like some insane, homicidal arcade game.

I've seen some pretty awful driving by Poles, but usually in involves making progress as fast as possible, not trying to convert your car into a boat!
