An Iraqi journalist throws his shoes at George W Bush

Published Date: 15 December 2008
GEORGE Bush visited Iraq yesterday, his final trip to the country that has defined his leadership – the quality of which was disputed by at least one Iraqi, who threw his shoes at the outgoing president.
Mr Bush got a size-ten reminder of the intense opposition to his policies as a man threw two shoes at him – one after the other – during a news conference alongside Iraq prime minister Nouri al-Maliki.

"This is the end!" shouted the man, later identified as Muntadar al-Zeidi, a correspondent for Al-Baghdadiya television.

Mr Bush ducked both throws – neither leader was hit. The gesture has added significance in the Middle East, where striking with, or even displaying, the soles of shoes to another person is considered an insult. "All I can report is a size ten," the president joked.

Mr Bush was visiting the Iraqi capital just 37 days before he hands the war over to president-elect Barack Obama, who has pledged to end it. The president wanted to highlight a drop in violence in a nation still riven by ethnic strife and to celebrate a recent US-Iraq security agreement, which calls for US troops to withdraw by the end of 2011.

"There is still more work to be done," Mr Bush said after his meeting with Mr Maliki, adding that the agreement puts Iraq on a solid footing. "The war is not over."

In many ways, the unannounced trip was a victory lap without a clear victory.

Polls show most Americans believe the US erred in invading Iraq in 2003. Mr Bush ordered the nation into war against Saddam Hussein's Iraq while citing intelligence claiming the nation harboured weapons of mass destruction. The weapons were never found, the intelligence was discredited, America's global credibility plummeted and British participation in the build-up to the war and its execution severely damaged Tony Blair.

In the news conference with Mr Maliki, the US president applauded security gains in Iraq and said that just two years ago "such an agreement seemed impossible". He added: "There is hope in the eyes of Iraq's young. This is the future of what we've been fighting for."

Mr Maliki said: "Today, Iraq is moving forward in every field."

Air Force One, the president's distinctive powder-blue-and-white jetliner, landed at Baghdad International Airport in the afternoon local time after a secretive Saturday night departure from Washington. In a sign of security gains, Mr Bush received a formal arrival ceremony – a flourish absent from his three earlier trips.

Mr Bush soon began a rapid-fire series of meetings with top Iraqi leaders. He met first Iraqi president Jalal Talabani and the country's two vice-presidents, Tariq al-Hashemi and Adel Abdul-Mahdi, at the ornate, marble-floored Salam Palace along the shores of the Tigris River. Defending the war, Mr Bush said: "The work hasn't been easy, but it has been necessary for American security, Iraqi hope and world peace."

Later, Mr Bush's motorcade pulled out of the heavily fortified Green Zone and crossed over the Tigris so he could meet Mr Maliki at the prime minister's palace.

The Bush administration and even White House critics credit last year's military build-up with the security gains in Iraq. Last month, attacks fell to the lowest monthly level since the war began in 2003.

There you go Lynne and Carolyn 1, even your hero Bush proclaimed the war isn't over, even he has come to the realization that you guys haven't won anything.
It is also a disgrace that your country knows exactly how many of its troops have died but you don't even have a ballpark figure as to how many innocent Iraqis have kicked the proverbial bucket on account of you guys trying to shove Democracy down their throats.
And judging by the reporter's feeling of Bush you Americans are most definitely not welcome there, so get out.

"I am not a supporter of George Bush. Nevertheless, the shoe thrower was free to throw his shoe without fear of serious punishment"

What planet are you now orbiting?!?!?!?

Multiple sources in Baghdad confirmed that Mr. Al-Zeidi was heavily beaten right after the incident. (He can be heard shouting in pain in this video). And after beating him, the Iraqi authorities arrested Mr. Al-Zaidi.

Here is a statement issued by Al-Baghdadia (the TV channel he works with):

www.albaghdadia.com/
(rough translation)

"Al Baghdadia asks the Iraqi authorities to immediately release our employee Montather Al-Zaidi in line with the Iraqi and US promises of democracy and freedom of expression. Any action taken against Montather Al-Zaidi will remind us of the behavior we experienced during the time of the dictatorship era that when we witnessed violence, arbitrary arrests, mass graves and the confiscation of public freedoms and private."

Abu Graib, Guantanamo Bay , rendition flights ....this brave man's freedom and well being are in extreme danger if we let him drop off the journalistic radar.

Mr. Al-Zaidi thank you for an early xmas present.

#15 if America went around "burgling oil" as you put it, then how come the Middle East countries like Saudia Arabia and the UAE are the richest in the world? Also, why isn't Iraq forced to pay for our military action to liberate it out of its oil sales? It used to be called "war reparations" and makes common sense.

So, given that when Qassim overthrew the brutal, pro-US, unelected dictator Faisall and the US backed the Ba'athist Saddam to take over from Qassim, and with US backing Saddam invaded two countries and slaughtered kurds, now, with one clan refusing to vote, the other half doing what they are told by religious clerics and voting for a number not a person in an election largely unmonitored because of threats........and you talk of the joy of voting?

You're having a laugh.

Post #23 its life but not as we know it

There was no "liberation"! The world was gullible enough to believe the lying mass murderer Bush that a third rate, tin pot dictator like Saddam running a fourth rate country like Iraq somehow posed a credible military threat to the USA. Bush believed Saddam could put his entire flotilla of rowing boats to sea and after rowing all the way accross the atlantic towing Iraq's imaginary H Bomb behind the last boat in some Iraqi woman's washing tub would still have the energy to launch a deverstating attack on the USA.

Israel gave the order to Bush to invade, occupy and colonise Iraq. Installing an American puppet government in Iraq ensured that it will never know sovereignty and independence again! Israel will never allow America to completley withdraw its forces from Iraq.

No liberation, only perpetual subjugation to its colonial master America who is the proxy agent of Israel.

Some good comments tonight about this topic.

Not a fan of Bush in any form but this made him look good.

He is not 100% stupid, I know I find it difficult to believe as well.

He must have been aware of the insult thrown at him (literaly) or what are his hoard of specialist advisors doing?

He delt with it calmly with a bit of humour, pity he did not do that before Iraq and Afganistan.

The Arabs looked like abunch of out of control pillocks, whats new, but it showed it big style that their security and US security, also let this man with a known record into the place.

The insult did not work, Bush is to thick skinned, what if it had been grenades the man was throwing, impossible one may say, Richard Reid was the shoe bomber though, what if they were shoes with explosives in them, wonder if everyone would have been so cool them.

The insult bounces back on the Arabs this time, Bush 1 Arabs 0, now thats one for the books,

Shameful all round but I do symphathise to an extent with the shoe chucker, if Bushes minions were in my land I would surly throw size 11 wellies at them, but I would fill them with cement and let them cure for a couple of days first.

First time G Bush Jr has seen action by the way Hurrah.

Zaidi should have been shot dead the moment he raised his hand to attack President Bush.

President Bush did not start the Iraq War.

Lying Iraqi informants told the CIA that Sadaam had WMD and planned to attack the US.

The CIA informed President Bush and Colin Powell that an attack on the US was imminent...similar to 9/11's attack...and they were believed.

Congress also believed that an attack was imminent because they voted to make a preemptive strike on Iraq.

Sadaam was given the opportunity to step down but refused to do so.

The mainstream news media on both "sides" placed all the blame for the war on President Bush.

So, who is actually responsible for the Iraq War?

-Lying Iraqis wanting the US to take out Sadaam for their selfish benefit.

-Sadaam for being too stubborn and stupid to step down peacefully.

-Insurgent militants and Muslim fanatics who have been responsible for the bulk of all American, British and Iraqi deaths.

-The mainstream news media who squandered their opportunity to report the truth about the war, but chose to play partisan politics and put a sleazey, scandal-ridden administration back into the White House.

There are a lot of guilty parties in the War in Iraq, but President Bush is not among the culprits to be named.

59

Let's have the truth,

"There are a lot of guilty parties in the War in Iraq, but President Bush is not among the culprits to be named".

Rubbish! Bush and Cheney planned to attack Iraq years before they actually invaded.

Blame for all or most of the deaths in Iraq sits squarely on the shoulders of Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and more of their cronies.

I still remember US tanks streaming into Iraq with banners that read, "We will never forget 9/11" even though it was widely known Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11.

There were many other means to overthrow Saddam but Bush chose the way that has almost bankrupted the US and will take years to recover not to mention the countless, hideous deaths and maiming of innocent children from Rumsfeld's "Shock & Awe".

Justice would have prevailed if Bush had been rendered senseless by the reporter's shoe. On second thoughts, he already is.

To blame others for "faulty" intelligence is a very convenient cop out.
60

Lynne,

Pres. Bush was re-elected to the Presidency, EVEN AFTER, the Iraq War and not finding WMD.

People forget that that for 3/4 of his terms the US has had economic prosperity.. that the leadership and Parliament of Iraq are now allies with the US. There are over 100,000 Sons of Iraq, who are Sunnis supporting the US troops.

This journalist writes for an extremist newspaper in Cairo... which had supposrted Saddam. He is an extremist Shia, one of 2 groups who want to bring back the days of Saddam.

The fact that the Arabs are protesting for the release of the reporter means nothing. These are the same people who were dancing in the streets after 9/11.
