A MASSIVE mile-thick brown pollution haze has settled over vast areas of the planet, changing weather patterns and threatening health and crops, according to the UN.
Vast areas of Asia, the Middle East, southern Africa and the Amazon Basin, are affected by the smog-like plumes, caused mainly by the burning of fossil fuels and firewood, are known as "atmospheric brown clouds".

When mixed with emissions of carbo
n dioxide and other gases blamed for warming the earth's atmosphere like a greenhouse, they are the newest threat to the global environment, according to a report commissioned by the UN Environment Programme.

"All of this points to an even greater and urgent need to look at emissions across the planet," said Achim Steiner, head of the UNEP.

Brown clouds are caused by an unhealthy mix of particles, ozone and other chemicals that come from cars, coal-fired power plants, burning fields and wood-burning stoves. First identified by the report's lead researcher in 1990, the clouds were depicted in the report as being more widespread and causing more environmental damage than previously known.

Perhaps most widely recognised as the haze this past summer over Beijing's Olympics, the clouds have been found to be more than a mile thick around glaciers in the Himalaya and Hindu Kush mountain ranges.

They hide the sun and absorb radiation, leading to new worries not only about global climate change but also about extreme weather conditions.

All of this pollution is mainly caused by the commies in China. We need to rein this country in otherwise they'll destroy the planet. China is a far greater danger to us than Russia. I'm afraid Obama will allow the Chinese more latitude whereas a McCain and Palin would have kept them under our thumb where they belong

Maybe the Amercans should stop polluting the planet.

I suggest they have a week of zero pollution, scientifically measured (call the result Zero Atmospheric Brown Clouds), and if that works, extend it to a month then a year and so on. No doubt the rest of the world will learn by their good example.

Curious to hear the "clouds" reached the Hindu Kush. Doesn't China's pollution head east over the Pacific to the Clean Lands of California.

What a bunch of drivel. Where is the study info?? Where is the link? The UN??? Come on!!

Scientists at MIT in Boston are puzzled by a simultaneous worldwide increase in methane levels. In the article “MIT scientist baffled by Global Warming Theory, Contradicts Scientific Data” online through tgdaily.com, Rick C. Hodgin reports this is the first increase in 10 years. The data collected contradicts theories stating that man is the primary source of increase for this greenhouse gas. Excess greenhouse gases take about one full year to cycle through and reach the southern hemisphere. In their research, these worldwide levels rose simultaneously throughout the year. This has now led them to believe the event is a natural cycle for mother nature and not the result of man’s interference of the natural world.

The combined, inter-related effects of the greenhouse gases, ABCs (Atmospheric Brown Clouds), the heating and cooling patterns in the atmosphere and on the surface, and rapid urbanization, explain the patterns of warming and cooling trends in China. The (ABC) clouds may also be triggering the extreme shifts in weather patterns including causing the monsoon.

The worst areas of reduced sunlight and dimming are:
1. East Asia, covering eastern China;
2. The Indo-Gangetic plains in South Asia from the northwest and northeast regions of eastern Pakistan across India to Bangladesh and Myanmar;
3. Southeast Asia, covering Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam;
4. Southern Africa extending southwards from sub-Saharan Africa into Angola, Zambia and Zimbabwe; and

Basically, China, with its massive growth and irresponsible manufacturing is going to kill us; if not with their lack of oversight in manufacturing consumer products, then with the massive amount of irresponsible and uncontrolled pollution it chucks out every day

Still refusing to face the truth I see.

"When athletes can't breathe during an Olympics, and everyone is walking around with a face mask, and still there was no outrage?"

What arrant nonsense! The Beijing Olympics were the most successful ever.

Maybe you are not old enough to have witnessed athletes wearing smog masks during the Los Angeles Olympics nearly thirty years ago.

Whatever you claim you cannot get away from the fact that the US has released more pollution in to the atmosphere than all other countries combined.

Similar to the US dropping more bombs on Viet Nam during its war on that tiny SE Asia country than were dropped by ALL air forces during WWII.

Whenever you and your ilk comment on China you cannot escape the fact that you are displaying an envy and jealousy of the country's development whilst at the same time US development is going backwards.

It ia only through China's success that the US has not gone down the drain completely.

Take your blinkers off woman.

A method and apparatus for altering at least one selected region which normally exists above the earth's surface. The region is excited by electron cyclotron resonance heating to thereby increase its charged particle density. In one embodiment, circularly polarized electromagnetic radiation is transmitted upward in a direction substantially parallel to and along a field line which extends through the region of plasma to be altered. The radiation is transmitted at a frequency which excites electron cyclotron resonance to heat and accelerate the charged particles. This increase in energy can cause ionization of neutral particles which are then absorbed as part of the region thereby increasing the charged particle density of the region.

A laminar microjet atomizer and method of aerial spraying involve the use of a streamlined body having a slot in the trailing edge thereof to afford a quiescent zone within the wing and into which liquid for spraying is introduced. The liquid flows from a source through a small diameter orifice having a discharge end disposed in the quiet zone well upstream of the trailing edge. The liquid released into the quiet zone in the slot forms drops characteristic of laminar flow. Those drops then flow from the slot at the trailing edge of the streamlined body and discharge into the slipstream for free distribution.

Abstract

Yes, you're correct: I do loathe the Chinese government. The country is third world and third rate. I loathe them for drowning babies in the rivers. I loathe them for polluting the planet and not investing the money to correct the problem, I loathe them for manufacturing with no regard for health and quality standards and for improper labeling, I loathe them for their human rights violations against women and against writers.

Do you also loathe your government for killing innocents with unmanned drones when targetting individuals?

Why is it that you loathe the Chinese government? It is not our government that is responsible for the wrongdoings you've mentioned, but rather low-life so called businessmen/women who are looking to gain financially at any cost.
We're are also not third world and third rate. We are the ones keeping your sorry asses afloat whether you like to admit it or not. You voluntarily buy our goods as well, knowing full well the pollution tab that comes along with the means of producing said goods.
Our government also stays at home and doesn't globally terrorize as your Bush admiministration has become so infamous for.
You personally support and back Israel who as we speak is disallowing humanitarian aid to their so called enemies, enemies they created by stealing their land.
When you take a long hard look in the mirror and see what a disgusting hypocrite you really are, maybe then you will finally wake up and see what a failure you are and do something to improve yourself and quit preaching to those of us who are striving to make the world a better place.

You're right as always: I have traveled around the world and when I was asked to travel on business to Australia and NZ, I turned it down; Now I just sit in my office half the time. The other half the time I'm doing stuff like research for our new Waters Act which is the first in the country, better health care, lower taxes, and right now- green tech in the state, which is booming. And that makes me a bigot. Let me see, last week alone I spoke with one Pulitzer winner (a naturalist) about publishing with us, and another guy with a best-seller on the NYT list(essays from leaders)about ways to promote better literary skills in our schools. I worked with a senator and a think tank on taxes and creating a healthy business environment. What a bigot AND loser I am. I stand corrected: I should be collectivizing like China and sucking in profits, I should be spewing out pollution not cleaning the air and water, I should sit on my derriere and not own a business- or is it because I'm supported by readers, not the government that irritate the Animal Farms?
Thanks but no thanks on the Animal Farm, I'll improve the world to be a society that promotes freedom and respects individual rights and I'll stay a disgusting hypocrite until I'm ash in the furnace. You can keep your collectivist thinking, and I'll keep my honour.

And by the way, I have become opposed to China in the recent year to the point that when I choose paper for a publication I specifically ask the printer to verify it is not made in China.

There's a 100% chance that most of it was made in China, even if it is a US company brand.

Carolyn 1,
It's nice to see that you are such an openminded and forgiving person, it's people like you that kept Bush in power for 8 long suffering years.
You preach to us about believing in freedom when your troops are shoving 'freedom' down the throats of people who don't want your kind of 'freedom', and when they resist your troops blatantly murder these people. You guys call it 'Shock and Awe' when it really should be called 'Shocking and Awful'.
Try messing with us in China here like that and see what you'll get for your troubles, but of course you won't for bullies on pick on a sure thing and not somebody that can and will stand up for themselves.
The Iraqis and Afghanis have suffered far too much under your thumb and you can't figure out why they fight back the way that they do. You've cornered them and they're fighting back the only way they know how because of lack of weapons so they use suicide bombers instead, as sad and as sick as that may be.
Your administration under the so called leadership of Bush are the worst terrorists this world has ever seen and it's people like you who support them that are the driving force behind that mentality.
Your 'Stars and Stripes' are becoming a hated symbol all over the world but you guys just don't get it, do you?

And every time you post here, you do spew pollution.

I can only hope people like you continue to show your hatred of America because many American consumers will stop buying goods made in China. As that hatred grows, we'll buy less, because we just don't like to give money to people who hate us. The less products the Chinese gov't will be able to sell here, the worse it gets for you and the better it will be for the Ameican worker.
We call it supply and demand: free enterprise.

Good luck with your hatred, don't let it consume you. I pity you that you have all that hatred, when you could be happy.

Nobody said anything about hating you or Americans but rather the 'Stars and Stripes' symbol that represents all the evil doings of your current administration.
I noticed that you have a habit of twisting things around to try to win an argument since you lack the intelligence and wit to speak the truth.
It is you that shows hatred to anyone disagreeing with you whether they are right or wrong and that's why you come down so hard on those that dare question your integrity or intelligence, which you sincerely lack on both accounts.
It's no wonder that you've chosen writing as your field since you lack being able to confront somebody face to face.
When the likes of you quit spewing your pollution then maybe America can become a great country again.

"a geek built my computer for 600 bucks"

....So what? I think you'll find the majority of the components were made in China.

Cairo is the place to avoid if you want to use your lungs again. A filthy brown smog hangs over the city like a dome, clearly visible when looking down from its surroundings.

"Most computer parts these days comes from China, they don't churn out the rubbish they used to, they produce a lot of very high quality goods these days"

You are absolutely right and with Detroit unlikely to build cars without a bailout Americans will probably be buying Chinese vehicles soon too.
