Republicans point finger of blame at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for 'partisan' speech

EVEN before the doomed vote on the $700 billion bail-out plan began in the House of Representatives yesterday, stocks were plummeting as tension mounted.
In Congress, members shouted news of the plunging Dow Jones average as others crowded on the floor during the 40-minute call of the roll, as leaders on both sides struggled to persuade rank-and-file members to support the deal. Within minutes of the
result, the recriminations had begun.

House Republicans blamed a "partisan" speech by the Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat, during the debate. She had blamed George Bush's "reckless economic policies", "fiscal irresponsibility" and an "anything goes economic policy" for the crisis.

After the vote, John Boehner, the Republican minority leader, said: "I do believe we could have got there today, had it not been for this partisan speech the Speaker gave. The Speaker had to give a partisan voice that poisoned our conference."

Later, the Republican presidential nominee, John McCain, said: "I was hopeful the improved rescue plan would have had the votes needed to pass, because addressing the credit crisis is of vital importance to families, small businesses, every working American.

"Now it's time for all members of Congress to go back to the drawing board. I call on Congress to get back, obviously, immediately to address this crisis.

"Our leaders are expected to leave partisanship at the door and come to the table to solve our problems."

Mr McCain also criticised his Democratic presidential rival, Barack Obama, and "his allies in Congress" for their "unnecessary partisanship".

However, Mr Obama himself took a bullish stance when he urged Democrats and Republicans to "step up to the plate, get (a deal] done".

He added: "Understand that, even as you get it done to stabilise the markets, we have more work to do to make sure that main street is getting the same kind of help Wall Street's getting."

And Henry Paulson, the US Treasury secretary, added: "We need to put something back together that works. We need it as soon as possible."

#1, quite right. If elected officials are swayed more by emotion evoked by a speech rather than their own research, constituents' demands and reasoning power, they shouldn't be where they are.

Blame Pelosi say the greedy GOP members.
------------------------------

What a bunch of dumb political manipulators these people are . Like their leader the evil Pres.Bush.

Facts are, 66% of the GOP members voted no to bail-out and 39% of the Democrats voted no to the bail-out.

So the GOP members blame Pelosi .. How pathetic is that.

Just watch the angry geriatric McCain blame Obama in the coming days .

The GOP is rattled, and they will lose big time in November.

Pelosi is a clown though, playing to the gallery like that when the key priority was to get the compromise bipartisan deal through. There is a point sometimes when politicos have to put country before posturing for political advantage.

Nancy Pelosi will be voted out for backing this bill. All of you fools do not understand what this bill will do to America!

Run Away Inflation!

You will get your money back but it wont be worth anything.

I am in her district and will make sure she is gone one way or another. How dare she turn on the people for her 20% kick back in public program funding to her constituency.

Doesn't anyone read these bills before they post here?

Anyone who read the failed bill will be fully aware of what it will do to the USA.

Anyone knows that continued delay will do even more harm to the USA and the ROTW.

Another three days to wait until Thursday - how many more trillions will be lost before then? Why the leisurely approach - don't your politicians know what's happening?

The Democrats did not need the support of the Republicans to pass this bill they have 235 seats while the Republican party has 199.
In all, 65 Republicans joined 140 Democrats in voting "yes," while 133 Republicans and 95 Democrats voted "no."The bill went down, 228-205.

It seems that the u.s political establishment which loved to claim leadership of the " free world " have truly forgotten their self proclaimed leadership and now fail to even mention the rest of the world. As always the american media follow suit and their lack of coverage of the knock on effects of their political masters bickering on the rest of us is very telling. As always it the coverage is purely on america - who cares about the world at large? Not the americans it would appear. Political dogma gone mad.

ALL politicians are "partisan" and for the vile Republicans, for the most part, to criticise Pelosi is to show crass hypocrisy.

I commend those Republicans who soundly excoriated Bush for his stupidity and the members of his dumb Cabinet who think they could have gotten this measure through the House of Representatives.

Do these Republicans think the American public and voter is as brain-damaged and noxious as they are?

The Republican party has no regard for the american public unless its time to vote - which it is shortly. It will be interesting watching them try to wriggle their way out of this mess in the coming weeks. The true horror will be that the electorate will vote in individuals ie McCain/the moose killing creationist rather than the PARTY they represent. Remember 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 on and on and on.... I fear that the americans will fall for the republicans again. If not...the electronic voting system will swing the vote their way again because it would appear that even that is controlled by the republicans and their cohorts

Pathetic twaddle on this forum! Many blinded by sheer hatred for Bush with no knowledge of American politics. Pelosi has been one of the most spiteful and divisive Speakers we have seen in many a year and she has done her party ill, particularly in these days when the Democrats want a consensus so that this whole mess will not come back to haunt them later.
She just cannot keep quiet and the massive resentment towards her caused the swing against the aye vote.
She will be lucky to keep her seat come November, having led a Congress that has an approval rating lower than that of Bush.
So, if you're going to comment ( and you know who you are) , at least get some facts and then opine, hopefully in a more objective fashion rather than running away at the mouth.

Ms. Pelosi was quite right, regardless of which party she affiliates to. And also, most of the Republicans voted against anyway.

This was not Ms. Pelosi's fault but that of the "free" economy traders and bankers who ran wild with the money and savings of private individuals, lending money they did not have to people and businesses who could not pay back.

Lets be honest, George Bush and the political party he represents are war mongering political rogues on a mission to destroy.

An illegal war in Iraq, countless dead American soldiers and a host of young mothers left to fend for themselves and their fatherless children.

He failed to go after Osama, the man he was supposed to hunt down. Instead he did what was planned all along, he went after Saddam.

Standing on the rubble in front of those people following 9/11 he already knew Osama Bin Laden was safe. He wanted Saddam! And the plan that was set in motion to make a war plausible had now come to fruition.

Is this the sort of party that people want to vote for?

Good call # 29! The problem is that we really do not know how spoiled, lucky, materialistic we all are. Whilst # 29 posts with some humour (I assume) there is a very valid message regarding the need to get back to basics. We all need to take stock of our lives and try and analyse exactly what has happened here. Let's start by teaching our children that until you earn the money, don't spend it.
30

Bermuda Hibby,

Hamilton 30/09/2008 17:12:11
Easy now # 30....this is not about George Bush or the war in Iraq....although he could have saved a bundle that could now be put to better use. This is simply about how we all assume wealth we haven't earned....it starts with your credit card (should from now on be known as a "DEBT" card) and extends to your inflated mortgage; the fancy SUV and last year's sommer holiday. We're wrong to spend money we don't own and banks are wrong to lend it. Irresposibilities across the board so let's stop pointing fingers and maybe we can focus a little harder on getting our collective house in order.
31

Sandi,

Nancy Pelosi is the worst Speaker ever.

Her sole goal is to get Obama into the White House. If she had wanted this bill to pass, she would not have made her incredibly stupid, insulting, partisan speech right before the vote began. When you want people who are not very happy with the bill at all to vote your way, you don't do anything to annoy them until after the vote. Nancy has breathed politics her whole life, She knows that. She knows how to twist arms. Look at how she and the Dems twisted arms to get superdelegates to endorse Obama. If she had wanted this bill to pass, she would have found the additional Democratic votes needed. This whole thing was staged. The outcome was no surprise to Nancy and the Dems.

Obama wants the ACORN money in the bill, and so this version had to fail.
32

Sandi,

San Diego 30/09/2008 17:22:04
For those who don't know what ACORN is, here's a article from today's Real Clear Politics which describes it:

Why the speaker of the house has this much power to poison a vote is beyond me....in that one moment she had more power and influence than the President himself. There seems something oddly peculiar about the process of passing a vote or even conducting a vote especially when the vote has global consequences.I suppose this point should not surprise us when one considers the billion dollar plus election circus that ultimately ends up with the biggest ego sitting in the Whitehouse with little influence over his army.

You are 100% correct, but the man on the street cannot be blamed for this crash. This crisis came about because of incompetent governance and big business rogue like practices.

Just give every American earning under $100K/pa a sum of $500K with the condition that they settle their mortgages, auto loans and credit cards as a priority. After that they can buy anyhting they want so long as it is made in the USA.....problem solved. Would only cost $1.25 billion!!!!! Throw in an ACORN or two if you wish.

First #22 calm down dude . U short fuse can cause damage to Ur heart.

19 britfree;
Dude here is the Palin/Couric interview of 24 hours all verbatim.
This is the cheerleader bimbo the GPO members want as their VP.

CBS anchorwoman Katie Couric did a joint interview Monday in Ohio with Republican candidates John McCain and Sarah Palin, and McCain came out denouncing "gotcha journalism" as he defended his running mate in the portion that aired on the CBS Evening News.

With McCain and Palin sitting side by side, the first flareup came when Couric asked Palin about a statement the candidate made over the weekend that the U.S. should launch attacks from Afghanistan into Pakistan to "stop the terrorists from coming any further in."

In that comment, Palin seemed to voicing the same position McCain had attacked his opponent, Barack Obama, for stating in their debate on Friday.

"So, Gov. Palin, are you two (she and McCain) on the same page?" Couric asked.

"...We will do what we have to do to secure the United Sates and her allies," Palin said.

"Is that something you shouldn't say out loud, Sen. McCain?" Couric asked.

"Of course not," McCain snapped. "But look, I understand this day and age gotcha journalism... Grab a phrase. Gov. Palin and I agree that you don't announce that you're going to attack another country."

"Are you sorry you said it?" Couric asked returning to Palin.

"Wait a minute," McCain said interrupting. "Before you say is she sorry she said it, this was a gotcha sound bite that...

"It wasn't a gotcha," Couric insisted. "She was talking to a voter."

"No," McCain insisted back, "she was in a conversation with a group of people talking back and forth, and I'll let Gov. Palin speak for herself."

When Couric asked Palin what she learned "from that experience," the candidate replied, "That this is all about gotcha journalism...."

Bush is still the president, but his party hasn't been running things for a year and a half now. It's the Dems in Congress who have allowed this to get to this point. It was the Democratic Party that pushed allowing un/under qualified borrowers to get mortgages a long time ago. They have done absolutely nothing to correct any of the things that they were elected to fix so that they could use all of it as election material now. Neither party has clean hands with this current financial mess, however McCain is one of a very small group, all Republicans, who tried to make corrections. The Democrats did nothing. Obama doesn't have a clue.

#39 cont'd...

Couric was again focused and forceful in her questioning:

"Gov. Palin, since our last interview, you have gotten a lot of flak. Some Republicans have said you are not prepared, you're not ready for prime time... And I'm curious to hear your reaction."

"Well, not only am I ready but willing and able to serve as vice president with Sen. McCain if Americans so bless us and privilege us with the opportunity of serving them -- ready with my executive experience as a city mayor and manager, as a governor, as a commissioner, a regulator of oil and gas,

And again, McCain stepped in to defend his running mate.

"This is not the first time I've seen a governor being questioned by some quote expert," he said making qotation marks with his fingers.

"I remember that Ronald Reagan was a 'cowboy'. President Clinton was a governor of a very small state that had 'no experience' either. I remember how easy it was going to be for Bush I to defeat him.

I still recall, whoops, that one. But the point is that I've seen underestimation before. I'm very proud of the excitement that Gov. Palin has ignited with this party around this country."

mike - across the pond,

Dude ,
The evil will be gone from the WH on 20 Jan. 2009.

But here are a few facts for U fanatical GOP member to chew on.

Bush's legacy will last for decades ' Like the pain and suffering of the families of 4000+ dead US troops and similar disaster for the families of 36,000+ US maimed troops, not for getting the 3/4 trillion tax payers dollars, lost in the IRAQ war . As for the dead and maimed Iraqi people , GWB doesn't give a rat's ass.

Even worst when the US attacked IRAQ they took out the mortal enemy of IRAN, which was IRAQ,
That then allowed IRAN 6 years to get strong and develop Nuclear system/equipment.

So when the evil Bush is riding in his Texas ranch, Bin Laden will be FREE to attack again, from his cave.

So a man in a cave outran the evil Bush in the WH who commands the world's mightiest military .

Obama when he is president has a high bar of evil to match against the evil Bush.

Obama would need to attack IRAN or N Korea to match the evil Bush's actions.

But that ain't going to happen dude. We don't have the money nor the will . And the masses of the LCD Americans are up to their eyeballs in debt, along with our Nations debt of $10.6 trillion (tax payers money lost)
And any more WARS will fail just like in IRAQ.

The WWII days of GI Joe are long dead and gone , as it the John Wayne Cavalry to the attack/rescue. (all way before my time)

Hey Dud , ever see the stickers on a fender (bumper)of a car or truck which says
"Support our troops".
That is the cheap cheap way to support our troops.

Those who do not have those stickers, but pay uncle Sam $hundreds of thousands of tax dollars every year . They are the individuals who really support the troops

Without the money from the tax payers there would be no troops. no guns no bullets.

So next time u see u a sticker on a vehicle reading 'Support our troops " Ask the driver how much tax he/ she paid this year.

Our US Fed Budget for 2008 gives the military 29 cents, out of ever tax dollar. That includes support for veterans.

Military spending is the second largest expenditure and burden on taxpayers .

And by the way that 29 cents does not include the 3/4 trillion dollars already spent and lost in the WAR in IRAN

Dude .
If the evil Bush had gone after Bin Laden in Afghanistan who committed the attack on the US , instead of attacking IRAQ who had noting to do with 9/11.

Then IRAN would not have had the breathing space, to arm and develop nuclear devices , because Iraq and Saddam was their mortal enemy and could and would stop them .Iraq also hated Bin La den's guts .

But our evil Bush got it all wrong .

My family pay hundreds of thousands in taxes to the US IRS every year . And like other high income families, they are putting their money into the military pot , while others use a sticker on a their vehicle fender.

Adios
and Glad u came back safe from IRAQ.

Alright Senators and Representatives, now is the time to formulate a real economic revitalization plan. Try something like the Swedish plan of '92. Apparently the former Deputy of Finance of Sweden was here in June or earlier and it appears as though no one listened. It's your job.Fix it NOW.
That's the message I sent to my government leaders, such as they are.
We,Americans, have been lied to for so long by our government that none have any "faith" in what we're told. The upshot of that was what you all saw yesterday on the stock market. This disconnect from reality is a direct result of our growing anger at the politicians who seem to think we're all dolts and as long as we listen to dumbed down news and suck up their sound bites we don't have a care, not!
We Americans have got to exercise our franchise and vote! It's absurd to think that 15% of our population is what elects the government. We folk need to get off our collective asses and step up to our responsibilities as citizens of America and to the appropriate extent to the world of which we are a part.

"All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing." (Edmund Burke)

obama may be a good man

obama has said that he will do NOTHING...

pull troops back to our borders...

negotiate with the likes of Iran...

granted he has flip-flopped on that "promise"... but he made it...

if he turns out to be as weak as he has "promised" to be, he WILL do nothing... and EVIL WILL TRIUMPH

a wager we cannot afford to make...

What in the name of God is "Omipolone?

And since when have you appointed yourself as the arbiter of comments in the forums?

They have moderators on the staff of The Scotsman that are paid to do that.

Don't be so ridiculous and think that your navel-gazing opinions and allegations and "thoughts" - if you had any mind - count for anything.

YOu are superfluous to present needs.
