RAF veterans honoured
A GROUP of RAF veterans were yesterday honoured for their role in the 1948 airlift which relieved West Berlin from a Soviet blockade.
The pilots, honoured in a new exhibit at the Berlin chapter of the Cold War Museum, were an integral part of the Berlin airlift, launched after the Soviets cut off routes between then-West Berlin and the rest of what became Eastern Germany on 24 June, 1948.
William Ball, 80, who was a flight engineer, said: "We were told that we'd been going to Germany for two weeks.
"We ended up staying there for a year."
