ARMED police and soldiers have set up roadblocks across Zimbabwe ahead of today's "poll" – the sham election in which Robert Mugabe is standing as the only candidate.
Police stopped vehicles on roads in the country's central and eastern provinces, searching vehicles and checking papers in what was claimed to be a search for weapons.

Mr Mugabe, 84, told a final rally in Harare's dormitory town of Chit
ungwiza he would defy African countries pushing him to postpone the vote.

He said: "I know some people are gearing themselves for an attack on Zimbabwe. I want to see any country which will raise its finger in the European Union. Our elections have been free."

Morgan Tsvangirai, leader of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) withdrew from the run-off vote on Sunday after supporters were told they would be killed if they voted for him.

The MDC claims at least 86 supporters have been killed since Mr Tsvangirai beat Mr Mugabe in the first round of elections on 29 March.

Yesterday, Mr Tsvangirai said Mugabe was "self-destructing", adding: "He has run a one-man show, he wants to run a one-man race". He forecast voters would be "frogmarched to voting stations by force" as Mr Mugabe attempts to claim he has won the popular vote.

Mr Tsvangirai added: "There could be a massive turnout because of the role of the military and the traditional leaders to force people to these polls."

With hours to go before the "poll" began, there were clear signs fear was spreading. State radio – the voice of Mr Mugabe's government – reported another 250 people had formally "defected" from the MDC in Harare North constituency.

ZBC radio has been telling listeners that Mr Tsvangirai is still a candidate.

The passion I feel for this continent is unrivalled. Even my beloved Scotland does not come close to filling me with such positive emotion.
But as I have made my way through this continent I have noticed that chaos is a chosen system, it is not an inherited one.
Every year brings a new tragedy and with it comes the same old colonial excuses. But as we know, colonialism cannot be blamed for continued African failure, at some point the truth, whilst hurtful, needs to be told. African leaders rule, they do not govern. And those who try to govern end up governing things into the ground because they are surrounded by incompetent fools at almost every level.
You may not have heard the news in SA in the last 24 hours. So encase you missed it, 60 people were murdered as is the case everyday, and by the time you turn on your computer tomorrow another 60 will be dead. In the last 24 hours over 150 women were raped, it is the same everyday. In the last 24 hours over 40 more people contracted aids and their only hope of survival is to listen to the Minister of Health who says that garlic and beetroot are the best cures. We have two police forces, one to police the community (SAP)and the other to police the roads(The Metro Police)Only yesterday these two forced clashed in the city centre and shot at eachother. One Metro officer was killed, motorists were fleeing the scene scared for their lives and bullets were whizzing about. Our government say crime is a perception, in effect what they mean is that they are too darn stupid to run a country.
Our ANC president is being supported by the ANCYL(youth league) who say that they will kill if Zuma is convicted in a court of law. In otherwords, if the highest court in the land finds him guilty then the ANCYL will take up arms and fight a full scale civil war. And Zuma says nothing, not a peep! No leadership and no firing within the ANCYL.
It is like Mbeki's approach to Zimbabwe, no leadership and no condemnation. AND THIS IS AFRICA'

AND THIS IS AFRICA'S MOST MODERN AND WEALTHIEST NATION! You must now understand what it is like in the rest. Our African politicians are not politically trained to govern, they are freedom fighting liberation people who are still fighting. Only now the enemy is within and the masses are an after thought.
Civil war is looming here. Another African disaster is on the cards, the writing is on the walls.

Caratacus

I think the situation depresses you. I could lie and pretend that things are great here in Africa, but where would that get us.
I just tell the facts, that is what is happening, I live it everyday as do all of us over here.

Happy, happy carefree Africa!

I am grateful to my remote, far-sighted ancestors who realised some 40,000 years ago that Africa held no prospect for the ambitious to strive for a higher ranking on the evolutionary tree!

If Mugabe wants to win the election so badly why not just fiddle the figures, no need then to frogmarch anyone anywhere or waste time and energy beating them senseless? You know like a kid sharing out sweeties 10 for me and 0 for you, 10 for me and none......

This all seems like such a palaver to win a democratic election.
